I am so smrtSeptember 18 Tank BasicsI thought I'd write a little about how I look after my fish tanks.
Most people test their tank water like crazy, dozens of test kits and of course money! I am too lazy and many might not agree but the only thing I ever test is the pH. This is done via a pinpoint pH probe and monitor, if you don't have one of these get one! its the most critical item to measure and affects the absorbtion of so many other chemicals and elements.
So, if I don't test what do I do to keep the water in great shape? I use common sense and I watch the tank, lots of algae and dirt in the skimmer ... then I'm over feeding - leather or colts closed, the pH is too low (but I have a meter for this!) ... if the tank looks good it probably is, it takes awhile to get used to what to look out for but it saves time + money.
I do about 5G water changes every week, this means I don't supliment much - I just add Kalkwasser for calcium + pH control, learn how to use this magic powder! but becareful, it can send your pH through the roof!
see ya,
